Questions I have been asked
Is that a French flag?
Err, no - it's a Dutch flag. You've not been paying attention, have you?
Are those hooters on top of the wings?
No, they're convoy lights. You'll also see them fitted to lots of other European military machines, including my chums the Uni and Grisselda.
Why the funny colour?
It's the correct colour for Dutch military vehicles. It's a little bit browner than the green paint on British machines - and if you want some it's code is RAL6014. When Lorraine and Gareth first bought me I was painted just like my British brothers and sisters, but after a little accident I needed a re-spray, so this was the ideal opportunity to go back to how I looked in my army days.
What are you like to drive?
Fun - but different to your average Vauxhall hatchback. Buy a Land Rover and find out!
What are all those levers for?
Well - the big one's a gearstick, just like your average car's gearstick; 4 forward gears plus reverse. The red one is for high- and low-range. The yellow one is for 4 wheel drive. So I have 15 gears: 4 forward gears in high-range 2 wheel drive; 4 forward gears in high-range 4 wheel drive; 4 forward in low-range 4 wheel drive (low range is always 4 wheel drive - there's no 2 wheel drive option); reverse in high-range 2 wheel drive; reverse in high-range 4 wheel drive; reverse in low-range. I think that's everything. Some Land Rovers have overdrive as well - another lever to play with!
How can anyone see past the spare wheel?
Easy: the bonnet sits lower than the bottom of the windscreen, so the top of the tyre is just level with the bottom edge of the windscreen. Once you get used to it, you realise it's not in your line of sight. The view from a Land Rover is better than the view from most cars.
Why aren't your lights the same as those on other military Land Rovers I've seen?
For commonality, the Dutch Army fitted Hella lights to most of their military vehicles. You'll see lights like these on lots of other Dutch military machines, even the Leopard tank.
